Did you know that over 200 cultures around the world have a story about a great flood as part of their mythology, and that nearly every major mythological tradition includes a “trickster” god or figure? Through studying myths from around the globe, we can discover more about ourselves, our values, and build empathy for others.
In this week-long course, students will explore myths from every continent through the lens of Joseph Campbell’s four functions of mythology. Each day, students will dive into stories that inspire awe and wonder, such as creation myths from various cultures. They will examine how these myths explain the universe, comparing different cultural views of the natural world. Through legends of heroes and tricksters, they will discover how myths shape societal values and traditions, revealing the moral lessons embedded in folklore. Finally, students will reflect on how myths serve as guides for personal growth, connecting ancient wisdom to their own life experiences. Through storytelling, art, and interactive discussions, students will leave with a deeper appreciation of the power of myth in shaping human understanding. A culminating project for the week may include writing an original etiological myth, explaining the origin of something in our world.
